Lucia Gorman, star of 'Bored Nightclub Girl' meme, recreates iconic viral images (2025)

The young woman who turned into an overnight internet icon as the protagonist of the widely known 'bored nightclub' meme has made a comeback to the public eye after seven years. Lucia Gorman, 24, gained instant popularity in 2018 when her nightclub photograph at Milk Club Edinburgh became an internet sensation.

The emblematic snapshot, capturing Lucia with a look of ennui while being whispered to by a friend, has circulated online millions of times, securing its place as one of the most emblematic memes in the annals of digital culture.

Lucia has now returned to the world of viral images by re-enacting some of the internet's cherished memes, such as Harry Maguire's 'Put the Bins Out' and the relatable 'Confused Math Lady'. In a collaboration with Samsung, she is promoting its Best Face technology found in the new Galaxy A56 5G phone.

This state-of-the-art function employs artificial intelligence to correct typical photographic errors like closed eyes or unflattering facial expressions in group pictures.

In these newly created shots, Lucia can be spotted making faces including squinting, blinking, and even pretending to sneeze, highlighting the typical problems identified by the brand's research: blinking, making awkward faces when saying "cheese", and people blocking each other are among the top complaints for group photographs.

A survey of 2,000 smartphone users has revealed that they spend an average of 468 minutes per year editing, filtering and retouching images to achieve the perfect picture. Furthermore, Gen Z was found to typically take around eight attempts to capture the perfect shot before they're satisfied enough to share it on social media.

Common photo edits include removing unwanted background figures and eliminating red-eye or glare from glasses. The most common instances of photo blunders are selfies, group photos, and theme park rides.

A significant 38% of people admit to being irked when they're the only one not looking their best in a photo. However, nearly half would still post a group photo if they looked good but a friend didn't.

When it comes to group photos, 21 per cent avoid taking them altogether, while a whopping 84 per cent have chosen to delete a picture rather than share it on social media due to dissatisfaction with their appearance or poor image quality.

Interestingly, almost half frequently crop friends out of their photos, with a quarter even admitting to cropping themselves out before posting.

The study also revealed that 32 per cent have staged a candid photo for a more natural look with Gen Z leading the pack at 69 per cent, followed by millennials, Gen X and Boomers.

Annika Bizon from Samsung remarked: "We understand the desire to capture and share life's best moments. However, our research revealed we spend nearly a month of our lives editing photos.

"We're empowering users to get their best shot effortlessly, so they can spend less time editing and more time enjoying those special moments."
